Where women’s work outside the home declined, their importance within it became more prominent, contributing to ideology. However, emergent middle-class ideas remained largely alien to plebeian women and substantially irrelevant to their economic circumstances, while at 18 WOMEN, HOUSEHOLD AND FARM the same time their household role contributed to the mechanism that created that construction.
