Irrespective of whether a child was born live, pregnancy affected the potential mother’s time, energy and approach to daily work. If a child survived, the early years were the period of maximum dependency. So even with stillbirth, infant and child mortality, many women had greater childcare responsibilities than household figures imply. However, in a period of high child employment at home or in other households, the image of very large numbers of resident children requiring full maintenance is somewhat overstated.
