When we finished an hour on the air, we’d spend the next two hours preparing another hour’s worth of material. The hour began with the network newscast from CBS. Then the local anchor billboarded the stories to come. Following a commercial, the anchor read local stories until thirteen minutes past the hour. Weather and another commercial came next, and then about four minutes of sports, beginning at fifteen past. Then there’d be a commercial, followed by a feature segment (a medical development, a consumer report, or maybe a commentary).

The mission was worthy too. We were informing and entertaining our fellow grunts, and if some officers also got informed and entertained, well that couldn’t be helped. I also liked AFKN’s priorities. If North Korean forces attacked, our job was to load up the remote truck and head south to safety. Now that’s my kind of military unit! S. Army installations in Seoul were located in Yongsan Compound, a nice chunk of real estate just a short taxi ride from downtown. AFKN occupied a sort of compound within the compound because it was isolated atop a hill.

Given that I was in the CBS newsroom on the most important news day of 1975, that was a reasonable assumption. Susan made more money than I, though not nearly what she was worth.
