This self-conception is not specific to the children’s organizations of Latin America, but is also found in those of Africa and India. 3. In the statements of working children’s organizations, it is repeatedly emphasized that they deserve social recognition for their achievements. Thus, in the statement of the first worldwide meeting of working children in Kundapur, India (1996), we read: ‘We want respect and security for ourselves and the work that we do’ (quoted in Liebel et al. 2001: 351). The ‘work’ referred to in the statement applies both to the working children as people accomplishing a job that is useful to their families and society, and to the children’s organizations carrying out the socially important task of contributing to the improvement of social relationships and to more justice.

Second, I will enquire whether a new kind of childhood is developing within the working children’s organizations which is no longer compatible with the ‘original’ bourgeois or modern Western view of the subject and of childhood, or which might even point beyond this. Third, I will examine to what extent and how the children’s movements’ view of the subject is linked with regional cultures and traditions, and whether specifically new and different conceptions and practices of the subject emerge from this.

The main point of criticism of these reports is that they used secondary literature, above all from the media, indiscriminately and without including findings from research of their own, or stating what methods of investigation they were based on. This made these reports of little use in the development of indicators for situation analysis of working children and almost no use for comparative study projects. Despite their methodological weakness, the NGOs’ publications contributed to bringing the living conditions of working children to the notice of the aid organizations, governments and research institutions and the general public.
